iPhone XR is the best-selling smartphone this year

Apple’s iPhone XR clinched the title for the best-selling smartphone in the first, second, and third quarter of 2019, courtesy of Counterpoint Research.

The report says iPhone XR remained the most successful smartphone in every quarter except Q4 2018 when it was launched.

iPhone XR also remained the most successful smartphone model in every region around the world, contributing to over one-quarter of the total Apple sales during Q3 2019. iPhone XR also outranked the latest iPhone 11. But, the later was released at the very end of Q3 2019, so it may jump up.

Here is the list of best-selling smartphones in Q3 2019, noted by Counterpoint Research:

  1. Apple iPhone XR
  2. Samsung Galaxy A10
  3. Samsung Galaxy A50
  4. Oppo A9
  5. Apple iPhone 11
  6. Oppo A5s
  7. Samsung Galaxy A20
  8. Oppo A5
  9. Xiaomi Redmi A7
  10. Huawei P30

The plan of Samsung to discontinue the low-end J series and lower the prices of A series has worked. The step taken due to growing competition from Chinese smartphone brands has offered much success to the Korean giant with A10, A50, and A20. However, no flagship Samsung phone made it to the top 10.

Furthermore, the recent Huawei ban also helped Samsung and Oppo to be the de-facto players in mid-range wallet-friendly smartphones.

According to the report, Xiaomi found substantial grounds in India, where it made its half of the Redmi A7 sales.

iPhone 2020

Even though iPhone XR was released more than a year ago, with iPhone XS and XS Max, but it looks like the low-price model with great specs like Apple A12 Bionic processor, Face ID, 4K video recording @ 60fps, and 6.1″ display has attracted masses. According to Counterpoint Research, Apple also adjusted the price of the iPhone XR in China and several other markets, which helped keep demand healthy.

We expect that the iPhone will add more smartphones in its lineup. According to leaks by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, a mid-range iPhone SE2 or iPhone 9 is rumored to be released around March 2020. Later in September, along with iPhone 12 and 12 Pro, two new variants of iPhone 12 as iPhone 11 will come out as well. So overall, five new iPhones may release in 2020.
