Samsung Remote Not Working? Here’s What To Do

You’re not alone if your Samsung remote isn’t working anymore!

Samsung TV remote controls have a ton of features that give users quite the convenience. Ideally, your Samsung remote shouldn’t stop working in any conditions. But as it goes with any kind of technology, your remote might malfunction sometimes and stop working. Maybe you dropped it, and it hasn’t been functioning properly since then. If you haven’t used the remote in a while, the batteries might have self-discharged. But no worries! We’ve got your back.

Here’s how you can fix your remote back into working condition.

Replace the Batteries

The most common reason your Samsung remote stops working abruptly is a problem with the batteries. Weak batteries aren’t the only issue here. Dropping the remote on a hard surface can also cause damage to the batteries. Replace your current batteries with new high-quality ones and try using the remote. If it starts functioning, you’ve found your problem.

Be mindful of the replacement batteries you’re now using. We wouldn’t recommend putting in batteries that have been lying around the house for a while. They would’ve lost some power lying idle for a long time. If you’re using rechargeable batteries, make sure they’re full before putting them in the remote.

Reset The Remote

One of the first things you can try to do is perform a hard reset of your remote. Remove the batteries from the remote. Unplug the power cord from your TV and wait a full minute before plugging it back in. Turn the television back on using the on/off switch. After the home screen is done loading, put the batteries back in the remote and check to see if things are back to normal.

If the remote is still not working, remove the batteries again, and hold the power button on the remote for 60 seconds. Doing so will drain out any residual power left in the remote. This will completely reset your remote. Put in the batteries and try again.

Re-pair Your Remote

Sometimes the remote can lose its link with your Samsung TV. Although it’s relatively rare for it to happen on its own, it does happen. If resetting the remote and replacing the batteries yield no result, you can try pairing the remote and TV back again. It’s a simple two-step process.

Point your remote straight at the TV and long-press the Return and Play/Pause buttons simultaneously for five seconds. Your TV will start syncing with the remote automatically.

Update Your Samsung TV

If you ever notice that your remote isn’t functioning properly, your software might be a little behind. Samsung releases period updates that install automatically, but some updates may require you to manually update. There are many ways to update your Samsung TV, which only takes a few minutes.

Here’s a simple way you can update your TV:

  1. Open up the Settings.
  2. Click on Support.
  3. Select Software Update from the menu.
  4. Finally, click on Update Now.

Other Things to Try

If none of these work for you, there are other small things you can try. Check for interference between your remote and TV. If you have an infrared remote, clean the lens on your remote with a microfiber cloth. You can also perform a digital camera test to check whether the infrared is working correctly. Open the camera app on your phone and point the remote straight at your phone camera. Press any button on the remote. If the infrared is working fine, you should see the eye of the remote flash on your phone screen.

Contact Samsung Support If Nothing Works

When your Samsung TV remote stops working, you can fix it in several ways depending on what caused it to malfunction. If all of these don’t work for you, try calling Samsung’s support service so a professional can help you solve the problem.
