Instagram test’s hiding like counts in some accounts

Instagram likes are about to go from public view. Instagram’s quest is to make the internet a safe place.

Instagram’s CEO Adam Mosseri made an announcement at WIRED25 that the company will test hiding like counts in some U.S Instagram accounts. The company will start bringing these changes in limited accounts from next week. Instagram has already tested hiding like counts in other countries, including Canada, Brazil, New Zealand, Japan, and Ireland.

Instagram will now join a growing number of tech giants, including Facebook, youtube, and twitter, who are experimenting with removing engagement metrics from their platforms. Users will be aware that they are part of the test once views start vanishing.

Instagram is also introducing algorithms and filters to eliminate offensive and derogatory content to make the cybersphere a safe place.

Experts on social media have expressed concerns on Instagram’s latest move, citing that this would make it difficult to determine the accurate follower count.
