The giant social networking company Facebook was also interested in buying Fitbit for $1 million that is approximately half of the amount Google offered to acquire it.
As we already reported about Google’s interest in buying Fitbit. Now, Google has acquired Fitbit for the massive amount i.e., $2.1 billion. TheVerge states that Facebook courted Fitbit before Google, but apparently, the money played a vital role in swaying the decision in Google’s favor.
“We’ve signed an agreement to acquire @Fitbit. Together, we aim to spur innovation in wearables and build helpful products to benefit more people around the world.” – Google
Indeed Facebook is lagging in hardware presence. Till now, its hardware devices only include Oculus VR headsets and Portal smart displays. However, the fact that Facebook was also interested to acquire Fitbit shows that the company aims to expand its hardware offerings now.
Facebook Longer-term Projects
Facebook Longer-term projects include augmented reality glasses and human-computer interaction technology to interprets brain signals. Additionally, an AR wearable is expected to be launched within three to four years which the company claims will teleport you anywhere in the world.
It is worth noting here; the company did not rush to increase the offered amount is a mild indication that it does not plan to enter the smartwatch and fitness wearable market soon.

It is not the first time that Facebook showed interest in buying the smartwatch maker as it also acquired Moves back, a then-popular fitness app for Android and iPhone back in 2014. Fitbit had nothing to do with the social network’s current offerings, but Google already has a significant presence in wearables.
