Dark Mode for WhatsApp is now available for the latest versions of Android and iOS

Go darker!

WhatsApp has finally rolled out its dark mode for every iOS and Android user. The dark mode will operate on systems with iOS 13 and Android 10 levels. Android 9 users can also switch to it with a few settings. According to WhatsApp, the dark mode is designed to reduce eye strain in low light environments.

The company confirmed the news through an official blog post. The new dark theme claims a fresh look with the same user experience. WhatsApp has come up with this dark theme after great UX research and experiments focusing on the readability and user’s attention on the screen.

The trending dark mode was in high demand, and Facebook eventually tuned the WhatsApp for dark mode. A spokesperson from the company said, “During testing, we found that combining pure black and white creates high contrast that can lead to eye fatigue. So instead, you’ll notice a special dark gray background and off-white color that lowers the brightness of the screen, cuts down the glare and improves contrast and readability.”

Note that the theme will only be available for the most recent versions only.

How to enable Dark Mode on WhatsApp

Dark mode can be set by simply going to the system settings.

For iPhone, iOS 13 users can get started by going to the Settings app > Display & Brightness > select ‘Dark’.

Android 10 users can get the dark mode by enabling it in System settings of their phones. In other words, users have to turn on Dark Mode of their device to get the dark mode in WhatsApp.

Users of Android 9 and below (we tested with our oldest device of Android 6, and it was not available on it, maybe it will be available in few days) can set the dark theme by going into WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Theme > select ‘Dark.’

Other Apps with Dark Mode

Other apps like Instagram, Reddit, Telegram, iMessage, Skype already have their dark modes. Following the trend and requests from many users, WhatsApp has now updated it.

All users can check their app stores – Google Play or App Store – and make sure they have the latest version of the app, else update the app accordingly. For the ones who are waiting for the update, dark mode will be available for their WhatsApp in the coming days.
